WE CAN WIN!
We LibDems are on the up-and-up. Here in the Tees Valley we can make a giant step forward by WINNING the Tees Mayor election on May 4th. But how to do this?
Trump, Farage, Boris are the most popular politicians today: unconventional, populist and above all “big personalities”. Accept the fact that most people are disillusioned with “conventional” politicians: they want personalities! Does this mean we must abandon our principles? Of course not. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has shown it is possible to connect with the public and keep your principles. I aim to do the same in the Tees Valley.
You want two things from your candidate: the ability to do the job, and the skills and experience to maximise the LibDem vote across the Tees Valley on May 4th. Remember, this is a two-stage election (Alternative Vote). If I can repeat the second place I gained in fighting Middlesbrough in the 2010 general election, we could win!
I have the two essential attributes: the ability and experience to do the job, and a proven vote-winner. A leading councillor for 40 years, Council Leader, Vice Chair of the North East Assembly, member of the EU Committee of the Regions, I have always polled above expectations, twice winning parliamentary second places, Bishop Auckland and Middlesbrough 2010 where we achieved the third highest swing from Labour in the region. As No.1 candidate in the 1999 European elections, I was the only LibDem in the UK to increase our vote from the 1997 general election, missing being elected by just over 1,000 votes.
I am well known across the region. For 30 years I had my by-line (name) in the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette (with a full page in the Saturday Sports!) and I broadcast hundreds of times on Radio Tees and Radio Cleveland, as well as often appearing on regional tv.
I recent years I have appeared on BBC2 “Newsnight” four times, twice being questioned by Jeremy Paxman! A few weeks ago I made a memorable appearance on the ITV morning show “Lorraine”, and I will shortly appear with my pal Rev Alan Powers as contestants on BBCTV’s “Bargain Hunt”, filmed in Darlington. I was also recently on BBC Radio 2’s “Saturday Morning Show”.
If you select me as your LibDem Mayoral candidate, I will do everything in my power to maximise the LibDem vote and win! I will use all mean available: social and broadcast media, the press, leafletting, canvassing, raising issues, meeting the public. Hustings and debates with other candidates are meat and drink to me - I will always make an impact.
